Science Meets Fitness

A recent article from T-Nation incorporates the science of liver pathways. Take a look. I must say, they did a pretty great job at simplifying the P450 liver mechanisms.

The Howard and DC Recap

I would totally post this @ the Escritorio Rx Blog but I know that that site is being filtered through Pharmcas

As I return on my flight back to Orange County, I believe the three day experience of DC is only a glimpse of the great and amazing experiences I can look forward to if I attend Howard Pharmacy School there.

This school offers many experiences that I can look forward too.

If diversity is what I'm looking for... we had 3 california students (SoCal and Norcal), Florida Gators, Cleveland "I lose 30 games in a row" students. Maryland students, people from Chicago and Michigan. The current students, one was from UCLA! woohoO! I thought the historically black college would be obvious, but I felt like it felt like a great heterogenous sample.

If tradition is important, the 1861 inaugural date should be enough said. Tradition of having the alumni from 1981 coming in and sharing his experience

If leadership, Kappa Psi strategically had their gathering on the second floor and were having a food donation service drive.

If service is important, outreach in the local community. Howard collaborates with community clinics and has their own hospital

The pros
Diversity
Metro area
Pharm.D./MBA
Dean was former teacher
Chill P3's
60 member class
student participation/groups
Research focused
Walgreens Rep speech
Formulation aspect
Going GLOBAL

The cons:
Little crossover between medical, dental and allied health schools on Howard
research labs are still being built. I'm thinking Irvine had state of the art everything and anything in the buildings
the library was modern architecture and a newness/crispness... but half the size of our older one

Aside from that, overall Pareto's principle follows... 80/20

As far as the trip itself....

First, must I say that to all those who said you can't play outdoor basketball in DC. It's been accomplished. Done and done...in the dark and 30 degrees outside should not dissuade any avid basketball fan from attempting a round of H-O-R-S-E, or in our case H-O-R, pronounced "whore" or H-O, as jolly ole' Santa cries out.

Second, I must say, hostels are such a fun amazing experience. The eclectic mix of different cultures, languages and communication mediums. I have a good friend who worked at the Banana Bungalo in Maui last summer and I can't recall a time when he didn't share a memorable store of his day-trips or encounters with visitors. Same goes for DC lofty. I imagine the word only connotes Ann Taylor loft and a kind of cold, bourgeois stay. Definitely not! First thing that stood out the flat screen! With HD Sports! HA! FIgures right? Other than that, the staff and the guests had their share of stories to tell about their favorite players and teams. I mean really, a New Orleans fan in DC? Better yet, did Shannon Brown really have a fan in DC? Whattttt?

From graduate students to foreign students, I definitely met more new people than back in the "everyone- knows- everyone" in the Orange County bubble year. Sad, but true. Other than that, their were other university students and USC alum out of all people.

Third, so much to do. I miss the outdoors and hiking so much! Ah, next time I come I think a hike or indoor rockclimb could only add more to the new colors and sights of the Botanical Garden and Natural History museum. In the hustle of bustle of the city, I was pleasantly surprised to find peace and serenity in the greenhouse and among a life-sized elephant replica.

Didn't get to see: Teaism, Jaleo, Dirty Martini's and the second floor of Busboys and Poets. :D Oh yah, and a Jacuzzi! Seriously, who wants to go to an outdoor rooftop jacuzzi in 30 degree weather. FAIL. Lol, Can I at least get an indoor one? Please and thanks?

Ps. I still don't know what time it is... To the point where I almost missed my connecting flight from Arizona to OC :/

As a recap.

a day guest pass at a so-so Washington Sports Club -$35.00. Laaame. What happened to a $10.00 guess pass?Sheeesh, I might as well buy two 15-lb weights and a circuit outside!

1 hour of sleep before interview: NOT advisable

N.O. xplode before a Math test and nerve-wrenching interview. DO_Able.

Knowing what CLXXXIV means? Seriously? What does that have to do with Pharm???

Recalculating a math problem in a jet-lagged half awake state answer was wrong. FAIL.

(I swear I did it three times: 1f I spend $1 per second, I could spend $1,000,000 in 2 weeks. Justify your answer. true False.
I put true. then I erased. StUPID FACTORS)

I started using the 1,000,000 over 2 weeks as a ratio factor and got down to .81.. and I didn't know how to interpret it.
So I was like let's start with the $1 per second... psh I calculated 608 thousand something

Realizing AFTER an intense Linkd In and google search, your interview was with a Centers for Sickle Center Disease (Good thing I plugged the immunology class in! )

Priceless.

Finally arrived at John Wayne. Cheers and Good night!

Dwight howad How to Gain Muscle Faster

Gaining muscle mass: it’s a primary training goal for many athletes. By spending time in the weight room, you will gradually increase the size of your muscles; however, there are a few things you can do to speed up the process.

When gaining muscle mass, you are actually enhancing the muscles you already have. In other words, resistance training doesn’t increase the number of muscle fibers, it just causes each fiber to enlarge. This process is called hypertrophy.

In a progression model, the hypertrophy stage typically precedes the strength and power phases. In contrast to them, it’s characterized by higher volume [reps, sets] and lower intensity [weight load]. The general guidelines for hypertrophy training are as follows:

* Load: 50 – 75 percent of one rep max
* Sets: 3 – 6
* Reps: 10 – 15
* Rest: 30 – 90 seconds

Although you’re not lifting at a high percentage of your max, you are challenging your muscles to fatigue with high volume and short rest between sets. Studies have shown that this method of training leads to the largest increases in muscle mass.

To optimize muscle mass development, it’s also recommended that athletes perform three or more different exercises for the same muscle group. This fatigues the entire muscle by engaging it from different angles and with different loads, ensuring that fibers left idle during some exercises are activated by others, and leading to even further exhaustion.

Athletes can also boost their muscle mass growth outside of the weight room. Eating a proper pre-game meal provides muscles with the energy they need to complete a workout with quality reps every set. After a workout, protein consumption provides muscles with the amino acids they need to rebuild and increase their size.

Sleep also affects muscle mass development. Approximately 50 percent of human growth hormone—a powerful hormone that stimulates muscle development—is released during deep sleep. Athletes should strive for at least eight hours of sleep each night so their bodies can naturally promote muscle growth.

Yoga and Love

Although I do not practice yoga, I came across this blog post from another writer through a Fitness sportswear company.

I love her post because it correlates to why I choose blog writing as a part of my daily expressions.
